I had a lovely time, learning how to sketch and paint a complicated tree in watercolour. The tutor had great tips along the way, and I left feeling more confident incorporating more difficult subjects into my landscapes.

Title or Location: The photo which is referenced in this watercolor was taken at Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park by Kavan Chay which made the cut for the 2024 Milky Way Photographer of the Year international competition.
I have always loved watching the milky way, its the brightest out at sea. I have never been able to capture it with a camera. I had this idea in my head about painting a red house on a lonely hill with the milky way above it showing how small we are compared to the universe. Then I came across this shot taken out at Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park by Kavan Chay and it was like the universe had heard me and given me a reference photo. the watercolor looks nothing like the original photo but I love

My friend asked me to paint something special for her to hang in her newly built home. She chose a photo of the beach she grew up on. It means a lot to her as she is really missing friends and family since she moved away.

The original was taken by my friend just as a storm came in while she stood on the beach at Gorlston Upon Sea. She loved the mood of the last light on the sand before the dark clouds blotted them out. And I was drawn to that too.

The beauty of watercolor pigments is that they are very versatile. Some colors are transparent, others are opaque. Some stain, others do not. Some even have granulating properties.?When watercolors are used without too much dilution, they create solid layers of color that completely cover up anything underneath. This piece demonstrates the opaque characteristics of certain pigments. Lilly was painted as a gift for a very fine gentleman who is also my friend.

My two sons both moved to Arizona for work and we missed them so much we immediately began trying to create a path for us to move to the Phoenix area. This painting was an attempt to paint desert themed flora to feel closer to them. We now live in a suburb of Phoenix and love the unique beauty found in the desert!
